To Do What You Like or To Like What You Do?

My friend complained to me that she has so many things to do everyday. She spent so many times on her boring job instead of enjoying life and doing things she likes. But she is not sure about quitting the job or not because it is paid very well. I don’t know how to comfort her from the despair. I remember someone said that you should like things you do not to do things you like.
In China, plenty high school students choose the major that they can reach the grade in the University Entrance Examination instead of the one they actually interested in. Four years later, they graduate form the University and start their job hunting. Things become worse and worse. People pick whatever they can fit in the recruit. Even the job has nothing relative with their major. Like a Biology major student works for an import company or a MBA student works for a government documentary department.
Nowadays, the hottest job in China is working for the government so that the civil service examination became the harder and harder. Even so, people still rush into taking the civil service examination like a swarm of bees. A friend of my, who studied English for six years. She could be a good translator. Nonetheless, she became an official. She stays in the office all day by doing some paper work without any English using. Oh, man, what a waste!
Personally, I used to believe that people should like what they do. Today, I am not sure about that. Why we cannot go for the one we like at the beginning? If unfortunately people failed choose in the first time, come on, you can do it better. There are opportunities for everyone; you can stop making it worse then change it in doing thing you interested. People are chasing the government job because the good pay and benefit. They fight the job like fight for a war. People chased a job so bad and frustrated the job soon. It doesn’t make sense. In my opinion, people are wasting their knowledge and time. In another word, people don’t choose the major they interested; they don’t use the knowledge the learned; they don’t work for the job they like. What a life!
For me, I only live in the world once, I want make it worth and fun. How about you?

  1. I understand what you mean and I also agree that it would be really nice to be able to do what we are interested in and also be able to earn money from it. However, economy doesn't always go along with personal interest. And I think the more concern people put to economy, to material, the more frustrated and despair they can be in a working life.

Whether they have work the job they like but earn little, or work they job they don't really like but earn a large sum of money, either way they both can possibly be unhappy still because their desire is endless.

  2. You know what??? I'm writing my personal essay just exactly on this issue! I had an inner conflict whether or not to quit my job with the same reason which your friend has but slightly different in the cuase of quitting; I wanted to quit my job because I did the same thing everday and became extremely bored with my job. I kept thinking whether or not to quit and I was so deperated, but finally I decided to quit and became happy again. I found my way out after quitting my job and here I am as a student of MA Program og CMU.

  4. I am a person who has a dream. I am also sure that everyone has dream and want to do(or to be) what they like, but how many of them can achieve that. I personally don't like my job and want to quit, but there are many factors which make me to do what I don't like; family force, and financial aspect. However, I always think of what I like and hope that if it's possible I will follow my dream. Because I believe that one can live with dream, but one who lives without a dream is like a dead.
